Modern and Classical Languages The program in Modern and Classical Languages is designed to enable students to become proficient in a second language and to develop an understanding of other cultures, both ancient and modern. The goal of the program is that students be able to communicate comfortably and confidently in the language of their choice whether through conversation with fluent speakers of French or Spanish or through reading the words of ancient Greek or Roman authors. In learning spoken language, students follow the natural language progression of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Since awareness of cultural and historical background enhances the study of language, students are introduced to the customs and lifestyles of the people whose language they are studying.
